Ganz so war es nicht (wie WDPG schon geschrieben hat), aber dies hing vor allem mit dem Gottgnadentum und der großen Macht der Herrscher zusammen. Auch in Byzanz, aber mehr noch in Mittel- und Westeuropa.

Wäre ich Antiquar, ich würde mich nur für altes Zeug interessieren. Ich aber bin Historiker, und daher liebe ich das Leben. (Marc Bloch)
